Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced his resignation this evening of March 11, 2024, after 31 months in power.

According to our sources, Dr. Henry, who is so far stuck outside the country due to gang violence in Port-au-Prince, would have announced his resignation to the government during a council of ministers organized via Zoom.

His departure was confirmed by CARICOM, which said it “took note” of the resignation of the head of government, during the closing ceremony of the high-level meeting on the Haitian crisis organized this Monday in Kingston, Jamaica.

“The government that I lead will resign immediately after the installation of the Council [présidentiel]”, the Prime Minister said in a pre-recorded address to the nation released shortly after midnight.

Ariel Henry will hand over power to a Presidential Council of 7 members decided during the high-level meeting organized Monday between Caricom and Haitian political actors.

The Prime Minister ended up announcing his resignation after nearly two weeks of violence in the Haitian capital controlled 80% by armed gangs. The latter, united within a coalition called “Viv Ansanm” began on February 29 a wave of attacks against public institutions, including police stations and prisons, freeing thousands of detainees from the two largest prison centers in the capital city.
